In Dissolution, the world only exists where you can see it.

This isn't fog of war. Beyond your circle of observation, reality simply ceases to be. Step away from a forest, and it dissolves into nothing. The ground, the trees, the resources, gone. The only way to hold the world together is to watch it.

You wake at an altar with nothing but a small circle of existence around you. Gather wood, stone, and fiber. Craft tools. Build totems that anchor reality in place, creating permanent safe zones in a world that wants to forget itself. As night falls your vision shrinks, and the things that live in the dark grow bolder.

Explore six distinct biomes: forests, tundra, swamps, wastelands, deserts, and plains. Each with their own resources, creatures, and dangers. Beyond them all lies the Void, a crushing barrier of nothingness that devours anyone unprepared to cross it.

When you die, a ghost holding all your aura lingers at the spot. Fight it to reclaim what you lost.

Build a network of observation: totems, campfires, beacon towers, to push back the dissolution and carve out a permanent foothold. Upgrade your view radius at the ancient altar. Activate obelisks scattered across the world to face the ultimate challenge.

Fish in rivers, swamps, and ocean shores. Tame pets that follow you on your journey. Discover torn pages, compasses, maps, and other artifacts hidden in the world.

How far can you push back the nothing?

Elfie's Research Notes

This is Elfie reporting in! Just in case anyone finds this note way later, here’s what I’ve done so far:

-The first boss I found was this strange tentacle thing? It dropped something called “the Watcher’s Eye”, as well as a magic key! I used the key on my home altar and it turned all purple. Still no idea what the Eye thing does, but it looks cool, so I think that’s worth keeping it around. I also managed to cross the void for the first time!! I used to be able to stand on the patches of grass in the void, but now even those spots cause the void damaging effect. Sorry void base, I’m going to have to let you go. You served me well!

-After hunting down more of the spooky purple bat things, I got enough dark aura to use on the crystal tower. Same thing as last time happened, but this time the beams of light were purple, too. Once I activated all the towers, another boss monster appeared; I think it might have been royalty, since it dropped a crown? I still have the crown, but none of the towers were reacting to it. I’m going to store it with the Watcher’s Eye; it seemed lonely in there.

-I took a stroll over to the crystal tower to find that the beams of purple light were still there, but pointing in places different than the three towers. I couldn’t extend the beams anymore, so I approximated where I thought they’d be and headed out! Along the way, I found many of these new strange alter things that, when I gave aura to, told me “a boss has been marked on my map” (I didn’t have a map at the time .v.). I also got a bit lost and found a new red-void biome! I call it a biome because it looks different, but standing there for even a little bit kills me instantly. Many lives were lost that day in service of science.

-On my way back to the red-void biome, I was surprised to see yet another Void boss monster appear from the dissolution! It ultimately wasn’t that hard to slay (thank you whisp pet! <3), but it did give me quite the fright! It had dropped a “Void Heart Shard”, which got me thinking - if there’s one shard, there must be more! Upon searching around the world, I eventually found those maps the alters were talking about. The map made it clear that there was the red-void all around the world, but it also showed that, much like the normal void, there were spots beyond it as well. I spent many days after that forging ahead into the red void in the name of science, finding rivers that cut through, but ultimately perishing all the same.

-While fishing, I checked the new catalogues I got of monsters and bosses, but all the bosses and monsters were empty. No matter how many monsters I killed, they would not appear in the log. I found more of the boss map alters and gave aura to them, but they claimed there was no boss to find. I guess I won’t know what those bosses names were. None of the other alters want my auras (dark or otherwise), so I’ve been stockpiling them for exploration.

-And that’s where I’ve been for the past several days! I found four new biomes (flower field [AVOID AT ALL COSTS], dark forest, jungle, and mushroom grove), and am continuing to carve my own little pocket in the dissolution. I hope this letter finds someone out there in this quantum space. Maybe if I keep walking back and forth enough times I’ll find someone to talk to… There’s always a healing soup for you!

Safe travels.
This is Elfie, Signing off

Hey Elfie,

Thank you for playing the game as much as you did. I’m actually shocked and amazed.

Thank you also for all the bug hunting!

You have now actually defeated all the game’s bosses. I wish there was a lot more there for you to play, seeing how much you are enjoying it.

To be honest, I am not sure when or if there will be another major update, as I am working on many other projects and I’ve now put this one on pause.

I really enjoyed building it, and testing this concept of “what would it be like to play in a world where the world itself does not exist unless you are observing it”. I think the concept came through well, but I can also see that it is just scratching the surface of what could be done.

To answer your other points:

  • Both the purple beams not aligning with the obelisks, and the monsters/bosses, and potentially other entities not showing up in the codex, are due to the game having been updated after you had already started playing. A new world should not have those issues.
  • The drops from the first two bosses should be able to be used at the altar, but again, because the game was updated after you started playing on an earlier save, it didn’t allow you to get use those items. But i think i might have been able to fix this one even for older saves.

Thank you again for playing it :) I’ve myself and enjoyed your journey.

I started a new world, and it seems my tower has despawned. It’s still showing up as on the map, but it is gone

I tried to look into what may be causing this and I am actually not sure.

Fortunately it seems that you already killed the first two bosses, so technically it won’t break the game that it disappeared, but very sad that it did.

Had you just reloaded the game? or did anything around it? did it somehow take damage? had you just upgraded it?

In this save file, I have only killed the Watcher. Reloading it doesn’t seem to bring it back at all. I don’t remember it taking damage, but I may have had my sound off at the time. I don’t want to impose, as this is very much your game, but maybe you could install an update that shows how much health your lights have? Maybe even a method of repairing them? (Also, this new world also has the same problem of enemies and bosses not appearing in the codex)

I tried looking for other causes for the beacon disappearing, but it seems to be an elusive bug.

I wasnt able to add a health bar or repair, but the codex should hopefully be fixed now.

I also noticed that the beacon was not allowing the beams to be extended anymore, and that should be fixed as well.

Has anyone discovered the map yet? I've been playing for several weeks at this point, and I haven't been able to figure out where/how to get it. I'm sure I'm just not putting the pieces together in my brain, but it's genuinely puzzling me.

Hey Elfie, unfortunately it is probably due to the map spawning logic having changed between when you started playing and now. The map got updated soon after you started playing to spawn in the first chest you open, but by then you had likely opened a few.

I’ve made an update now with better logic around it so that it should check if you have found it before or not.

Let me know if you find it now.

Oh my gosh, I can see the world now!!!!! I had no idea I was missing any of that, that's so cool!!! Maybe now I can finally figure out what the boss items do XD

(+1)

I got all the materials for the Void Sword and it won't let me craft it :(

(+1)

Where you close to a furnace when trying to craft it?

(+1)

Yes, I was! I'll experiment getting closer, but I was able to craft the other furnace-exclusive items from the same distance.

(+1)

Okay, after doing some experimenting, it seems this glitch was only happening in my swamp furnace? I went to a different furnace and it works fine now! (Also, there seems to be a glitch where monster noises will keep repeating after they're dead? It's only happened with the newest update, though)

(+1)

repeating noises should hopefully be fixed now.

(+1)

My bases certainly won't be happy with the new monster spawn system, but I sure am. Thank you for the update! I will let you know new glitches as I find them!

Notes on new update (will edit as I find new things):

-Crops do not stay upon reopening the game

-Going to and from full screen removes the ability to see what's in your hand inventory. One way I've found to get it back is by catching a fish

-The spawn rate of dark aura-dropping monsters seems very low. I had found three within my first 20 minutes, but 2 hours later, I've still yet to find another

Update: I have figured out how to get more dark aura creatures!!!

Turns out I wasn't far-off with my "limit on potential spawning" theory two weeks back. If you run away from an enemy and it vanishes, the game still holds that enemy in a kind of stasis storage but - and here's the part that's strange - the enemy only "exists" somewhere near the spot it first appeared. If you exceed the maximum amount of stored enemies, the game will stop spawning new ones, leaving you free to run around (but ultimately dark aura-less).

Unfortunately, in order to solve this issue, I had to open the debug menu using the "`"/"~" key. In that menu, you can see how many enemies are currently stored in quantum space, ready to appear the next time a new space is uncovered. The enemy that will appear is limited to whatever biome you're in (or nearby), and since each of the lil desert sprite thingies count as their own enemy, they fill up the enemy total real quick. If your home base is near a large stretch of desert/wasteland biome, consider venturing into that area more to do some spring cleaning, and lowering the total enemies count in the world. You'll know you're doing it right if at random points in the game the total monster count goes up by one, which means you're about to see a new monster!

Once you have new monsters spawning, I advise moving to the patch of void that is most convenient to you, and do the usual quantum pacing strategy. Sometimes you will get the other ghosts/spirit/thingies spawning, just remember to dispatch them as they arise. Rinse and repeat, and you should eventually find the dark aura creatures!

Happy hunting, everyone. This is Elfie, signing off! :D

Hey Elfie, with the last update i think i might have fixed all the issues you raised.

Crops should save, mosters should keep spawning, and the hotbar items should remain visible + it now looks better.

More info in the dev update

I think the little quantum campsites are despawning after a certain amount? I came back into the game, and where I had put my lights they were gone (light still there, but the campsite is gone). Maybe I've simply explored so much of the map that there can only be a certain amount of those campsites at a time? No clue when this started happening, but I think I'm gonna avoid exploring too far for now, just to be safe. Collecting resources is satisfying enough, as is.

When the game is updated, will the saves remain? I really enjoy playing this game, and even though I can't progress anymore past this point, I still want to keep making more light totems and explore the world. If I do that, will that progress save over to the next update? Thank you for making such an awesome game - I eagerly await the next update! :D

(+1)

This is such a cool game!! The entire concept is awesome, both in a story/setting sense and in a gameplay sense, cuz it's a great way to have replenishing resources and new landscape, and also adds so much intrigue! Like what's going on?????

I've had a lotta fun playing it, and when I thought I was getting to the end, BOOM!! Boss fight!!!! And the light went out! And suddenly there was even more to do :D
Rip to my base though, turns out I should NOT have built my base in the one single area with a lightable light that goes out upon the boss being awakened... thankfully I was able to rebuild, and nothing of great value was lost (other than my pride). ((I've now build a greater totem to ensure things stay this time))

Also love the pet system, it's very cute!! I kept ending up with daschunds until I tried the void crystal and was so excited to see the bowl fill!! I love my lil void guy, he helped me beat the boss <3

I must admit though I am now completely stuck- I need more dark aura to relight the totem but I only have 20, and no clue where I got it from :0 My best guess is the boss? I've wandered and explored and cannot seem to find anything that drops it. I've tracked down and revisited the other obelisks (still lit), I've carried the key and eye with me in case that spawned it, (didn't), and I'm unsure now what to do >.< I also don't seem to be finding more codex pages anymore, I found the first few in chests then chests abruptly changed to only had resources in, but the animals, pets and fish sections are still locked :0 Also haven't found the map somehow.
The codex information also doesn't seem to fill out properly, I have 0 monsters filled in but have definitely encountered them lol, including the boss! Some items also aren't filling in, like the fishing rod and torch, both of which I have in my inventory as we speak ._.

So yeah not sure if all that is a bug (wondering if I was supposed to get 25 dark aura from defeating the boss? Assuming that's even where I got my 20-?) But regardless I've had a lotta fun, this is a super neat game I really like it!!! :DDDD

(+1)

Aha, I've figured out why some items aren't filling in the codex- seems you need to drop and pick them up for it to register, just crafting them doesn't seem to trigger it. Which would also explain why the monsters aren't filling in, since I can't exactly pick them up! (Now I have the mental image of my character having had enough and snapping and bodily picking up one of the monsters and chucking it into the ocean)

Thank you so much for playing and for the detailed feedback. Really glad you’re enjoying it!

A patch just went out today that addresses several of the issues/bugs you encountered.

Dark Aura: The boss does drop 20, and each of the Void Shade enemies that it spawns during the fight drop 1 dark aura as well. More Void Shade enemies can spawn in and near the void ring that surrounds the entire first stage of the map.

Because this is just a demo, there technically is nothing else to do yet after killing the main boss. You can reactivate the beacon with Dark Aura, but it doesn’t do anything yet.

Codex not registering items/monsters: Crafting and combat kills weren’t triggering codex entries, only pickups were. This has been fixed.

Map: The map is now 100% the first key item found in the chests. Plus it has a whole new UI to it. Unfortunately i have not tested if it fixes existing saves.

Codex pages: there are 4 and they should all be discoverable, in separate chests. Chests can now spawn in more biomes.

Cool concept. Difficulty is too harsh at beginning. Not a fan of structures taking friendly fire.

Thank you for the feedback :)

Agree, it feels a bit too harsh at times. I’ve rebalanced the enemy spawning a bit, especially at night, and also made sure that they cannot spawn on any observed tile (was an issue near the beacon and obelisks).

I’ve updated the structures so that they can be picked up instead of hit. Enemies will still go after any structure that has an observation view.

The beacon is also now always visible on the map, so that if players really cannot find it, they will know where it is once they find the map.
